Br. Okongo Benjamin is a 22-year-old young man from Mulanda, Tororo in eastern Uganda. He was born into a Catholic family as the seventh child out of the eight children, and his faith journey began at an early age when he attended Mass with his parents, Mr. Owere John and Mrs. Rose Aketch. He later stayed with a church catechist for three years, where he first learned about the life of St. Padre Pio—a story that deeply inspired him. He likes singing and playing football. His admiration for Padre Pio planted in him the desire to become a Franciscan and serve God as a priest. While in primary school, he became an altar server and continued to serve the Church through the choir, YCS, catechism, and sacristan roles during his time at Mulanda Secondary School.

His desire to serve as a missionary priest with the Sons of St. Pius of Pietrelcina stems from the humble and faithful example set by St. Padre Pio. With encouragement from priests and religious mentors, Br. Benjamin embraced the Franciscan spirituality and officially began his journey of priestly formation. Having successfully completed his initial formation, he has now been admitted to pursue a three-year degree in Philosophy at Tangaza University in Nairobi, starting in August 2025. This course is essential for his growth as a priest and will provide the spiritual and intellectual foundation he needs to carry out his future ministry with commitment and compassion.

However, due to financial challenges facing the Association, Br. Benjamin is in urgent need of support to cover his tuition and accommodation fees for the entire three-year program. Any financial assistance will be a great blessing, enabling him to pursue his studies uninterrupted and fully dedicate himself to his calling. Your support will not only help in the formation of a future priest but also contribute to the service of the poor, sick, and marginalized communities he hopes to serve in his mission. Br. Benjamin is committed to working hard in his studies and is deeply grateful for any assistance offered.

About my community:
St. Anthony of Padua (Fort Portal)
In the Diocese of Fort Portal, CARITAS helps to sponsor Capuchin Franciscan seminarians during their priestly formation. The patron Saint for this community is St. Anthony of Padua, and we pray for his intercession so that these young men excel in their studies and also become holy priests, spreading the Gospel wherever they are assigned after ordination.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
