Sarah Happian
Sarah stays with her parents and two siblings. Her parents are peasant farmers and they carry out their business on a small piece of land of about two acres. They grow a variety of crops such as coffee, bananas, beans, cassava and potatoes.
The land being small, they cannot have a enough harvest from gardens to sustain the home and at the same time clear tuition fees for their children. Basically, the products from the gardens are consumed by the family leaving the school requirements not attended to.
Sarah goes to one of the privately owned schools. Her class work is promising and if any assistance is extended to her, she will be able to work harder to realize her dream of being teacher.
About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
