When Mercy was 5 years old, her father died tragically after falling off a building he was working on. He was a construction worker, and the only source of income for their family. The family was left in a rental house that they could not afford because Mercy’s mother was not employed – she dropped out of school when she was in Primary 7 and never got the opportunity to learn a professional skill.
Eventually, Mercy’s family were evicted from the house and they moved instead to another house where they work as caretakers. Her mother digs in people’s gardens to get food and some money for clothing but she struggles to make enough to afford tuition fees.
Mercy needs sponsorship to be able to stay in school and get an education. She loves to dance and sing and she hopes to become a midwife when she grows up.
