Mark Luutu
Uganda
DOB: 05/06/2009
Male
Good Health
Favorite Subject: Math
Favorite Pastime: Soccer

Mark’s parents sadly have both passed away. His father, who suffered from HIV/AIDS, was the first to die, and in 2019 his mother also passed on. This left the 5 children in the care of their paternal grandmother, who works very hard to provide for them all.

She is a peasant farmer, and she sells food that she grows like matooke (a type of banana) and cassava (a kind of root) to earn money for the family. But unfortunately these crops take so long to grow that sometimes she doesn’t have enough money to pay for her grandchildren’s school fees.

Mark is a kind boy who loves to play soccer, and hopes to become a doctor when he grows up if he is able to finish school.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
