Joselyn lives with her mother and siblings in the suburbs of a small trading center in central Uganda. Her parents separated after a long period of domestic violence linked to her father’s alcohol use, which made life unsafe for the family.
Her father did not have stable employment and mainly took on occasional casual work such as cleaning compounds for wealthier households. Much of his time, however, was spent in drinking gatherings, which contributed to the instability at home.
Joselyn’s mother now rents a small room where she also runs a small banana stall to support her six children. The income she earns is used mainly for food, with only a small portion sometimes going toward school fees for her children, including Gorreth, Carol, and Joselyn.
Joselyn has recently started attending a nearby nursery school. In order to keep her enrolled, her mother has engaged with the school administration and sometimes contributes by doing small tasks such as cleaning the compound in place of fees.
With consistent support, Joselyn would be able to continue her early education in a more stable and secure environment.
