Dorothy's family is facing extreme poverty, primarily relying on farming their small plot of land. However, recent years have seen low harvests due to pests and disease, leading to financial hardships. They struggle to produce enough food for their own consumption and lack crops to sell for other necessities.

Despite their dire circumstances, Dorothy's father recognizes the importance of education and dreams of providing it for his children.
