Betty lives with her mother and three siblings following the passing of her father. Her father struggled with alcohol use despite repeated medical advice to stop. One evening, after drinking on an empty stomach, he collapsed and was taken to a nearby clinic, where he sadly passed away that same night.

Since then, Betty’s mother has taken on the full responsibility of caring for the family, though she initially had no stable source of income. To support her children, she now takes on various small jobs, including selling charcoal, tomatoes, and firewood. While some well-wishers have offered occasional help, it remains difficult for her to consistently meet school-related expenses.

Betty is a hardworking and determined pupil, but her progress at school is often affected by a lack of basic learning materials and school requirements.

With consistent support, Betty would be able to continue her education without interruption and focus on achieving her academic goals.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
