Andrew has been passed from person to person, hoping that someone will care for him. After his parents separated, Andrew’s mother left him with his father, who brought him to live with his grandmother when he was only a year old and disappeared. The grandmother, who was in poor health then and has been growing even more sick since, could not provide for him herself. She had to send Andrew to a great-aunt who was the only person who could take care of him, and he is there now.

According to his grandmother, they have tried to track down Andrew’s parents but have failed to reach either of them; and he is in need of support like feeding, clothing, medical care and schooling, which his relatives struggle to provide. The great-aunt is a peasant farmer and cannot send Andrew to school, but Andrew wants to become a civil engineer if he gets the chance to go to school.
