Mary Roselyne faces significant challenges due to her diagnosis of sickle cell anemia. Her parents have been grappling with the financial burden associated with her medical care, exacerbated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on her father's employment. Prior to the pandemic, he was supportive, but job loss has added to their difficulties.

Roselyne and her sister (Whitney) are currently on hydroxyurea and Folic Acid; essential medications for managing sickle cell anemia. The cost of these medications, along with the expense of a Pneumococcal 23 vaccine every five years to prevent pneumonia, poses a financial strain on the family. The mother highlights the challenges of managing Roselyne's condition, including the need for daily medication, antimalarial drugs, and the high cost of hospital admissions during crises. The mother says she uses 40% of her earning on Roselyne and her sister's medication and she is not able to sustain her in school.

Roselyne's dream is unlikely to happen without sponsorship. The mother requested assistance from a nun who also has no income apart from prayers and it is Sr Jane who requested her educational support so that she can have a better future.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
