Help Heal the Devastation

Like Africa, statistics show that the over-whelming needs of orphaned children for food, clothing, adequate housing, healthcare, and education are not being met. This has been amplified by the 7.2 earthquake in January 12, 2010, Tropical Storm Thomas and the outbreak of Cholera. The numbers are staggering and it is hard to precisely determine the number of orphaned and displaced children and adults. Two-hundred and fifty thousand perished during the earthquake in 2010.

The need in Haiti is huge and sadly the daily the suffering of the Haitian people seem to escalate .In Haiti, CARITAS’ partners are the indigenous Congregation of the Little Sisters of St. Therese of the Child Jesus. These Sisters work in partnership with CARITAS to help provide some hope and encouragement to help ease the desperate situation of daily life in Haiti. CARITAS will work in five areas where the Little Sisters have their facilities.

Currently CARITAS For Chidlren in partnership with the Little Sisters of St. Teresa has 5 locations in Haiti. These are:

Riviere Mancelle Riviere Froide -- This area was particularly devastated by the earthquake.  Here the Sisters lost 4 Sisters who died when their convent and chapel collapsed and over 100 elementary school students and 10 lay personnel died  when their school collapsed during the earthquake.

Ti Riviere Bassin Bleu  --  located in southeastern Haiti in the hills of Jacmel. This is a   beautiful but very rugged area with very little access by roads. The best means of transport is by plane, it is a 12 minute flight from Port-au-Prince.

Marbial -- In all these areas the Little Sisters administer, manage, primary day schools. In Ti Riviere the Little Sisters run a primary day school as well as an orphanage.
