Nicholas and his two sisters face significant challenges at home, primarily due to their mother's absence. She left the family three years ago under the guise of seeking employment to support her children and has not been heard from since. This left Nicholas's father as the sole caregiver for his three children, a role he has embraced despite facing numerous obstacles. Without a stable job, Nicholas's father relies on small-scale farming to sustain the family. He cultivates crops mainly for their consumption, and any surplus is sold to meet other essential needs, including the children's education.

The father's efforts to maintain the family and provide for his children's educational needs are commendable but insufficient. The small plot of land he farms produces just enough to keep the family fed, with little left over for other necessities. As a result, Nicholas and his siblings' access to education is precarious and contingent on the family's ability to generate extra income from selling crops.

Nicholas, currently a primary one student at a nearby private school, shows promise as a diligent student with a bright academic future. His aspiration to become a teacher speaks volumes about his passion for learning and desire to give back to his community. However, the financial instability of his family poses a significant barrier to realizing this dream. With the right support and resources, Nicholas has the potential to overcome these challenges and achieve his goals, providing hope not just for himself but also for his family.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
