Evans' family situation is emblematic of the challenges faced by many in rural, agricultural communities. His parents, both peasant farmers, are responsible for supporting a large family of eight children. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, several of Evans' siblings were unable to complete their primary education. This lack of education has had significant consequences; the boys find themselves engaged in strenuous labor at a local stone quarry, while the girls often enter early marriages for financial support.

The family subsists mainly on the produce and animal products from their small rented plot of land. Any surplus from their agricultural efforts is sold, but the income generated is barely enough to cover basic needs, often leaving the children's educational expenses unmet.

Evans, currently enrolled in school, shows promise in his academic pursuits. However, his education is frequently interrupted due to his parents' inability to consistently pay his tuition fees. Despite these setbacks, Evans harbors aspirations of becoming a civil engineer, a dream that hinges on the continuation and completion of his education.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
